Ecstasy in the Cacophony Extras

The Ecstasy in the Cacophony Mix CD

I unveiled the first printing of Ecstasy in the Cacophony at APE in 2006, and as a promotional gimmick I briefly considered making a mix CD to hand out free with a purchase of the comic.  After further consideration of the possible legal hazards I decided against it, but not before choosing 13 songs that roughly match the mood or theme of the comic’s 13 installments.  For those of you interested in making your own Ecstasy CD or Ecstasy playlist for your iPod, here are the tracks:

1. El Scorcho by Weezer • 2. Red Hot Moon by Rancid • 3. Bohemian Like You by Dandy Warhols • 4. Girls and Boys by Blur • 5. Dirt by Death in Vegas • 6. Jump N’ Shout by Basement Jaxx • 7. Ebeneezer Goode by The Shamen • 8. Kalifornia by Fatboy Slim • 9. What She Wants by Felix da Housecat • 10. Paper Tiger by Spoon • 11. Take Ecstasy with Me by The Magnetic Fields • Pictures of You by The Cure • and Sorted for E’s and Wizz by Pulp

Portrait of the Artist as an Earnest Young Partygoer

Sample diary entry from the time:  “I mean, at that moment, and long into the night, I loved every person there and kept telling them so.  Looking back I’m a little embarrassed, not just about the free love but for being so in love."

PS Mueller Cartoon

I've always loved this comic. © PS Mueller, who told me the following story when granting permission to post his comic here:

About 22 years ago I was drinking my way through Chicago with a friend of mine and we ended up in a kind of warehouse nightclub place with lots of lights and techo-ish music. It was about 3:00 a.m. and some guy latched onto my friend and wouldn't leave her alone. I ended up borrowing a live boa constrictor from some chap and returned to our table with it around my neck. The guy bothering my friend took one look at the snake and split, so I returned the serpent, bought its owner a glass of juice, and enjoyed the rest of the night in relative peace. I'm 57 now and still enjoy flipped out electronic music, particularly Monolake and Boards of Canada. I think I must have been at a sort of "pre-rave." Then again, I was pretty wasted at the time.

My friend who dragged me to the warehouse is now a big deal Chicago judge. Her name shall be withheld.
