“I Am an Amanuensis” 32, Clowes

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

“People who are super-serious about politics all the time give me the total creeps! […] It’s definitely some psychological thing … It’s not like these are just groovy, concerned people who actually care about humanity … it’s like the same as when guys are really into sports!”

From the mouth of Enid Coleslaw, heroin of Daniel Clowes’s Ghost World. Page 40, panels 6 and 9. And we know how Clowes feels about guys who are really into sports … There’s also an interesting quote on the Fantagraphics page for Ghost World from Lisa Simpson: “I really identified with the girls in Ghost World. They made me feel like I wasn’t so alone.”

The Scratch Papers, Page 50, “Leonardo versus the Foot Clan!”

Yet another early attempt at comics from 1988 or 1989. Whereas I don’t remember what inspired my “Michelangelo versus Dracula!” comic, I’m quite sure this was very strongly influenced by Leonardo #1, published by Mirage Studios in 1986. A slightly different version of this story can be found in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie starring Raphael.

“I Am an Amanuensis” 31, Rancid 1

“Testify my love for you / and I know it runs deep through your body too.”

Old Friend,” one of my most favorite songs ever, by Rancid, from … And Out Come the Wolves. Although I always thought he said, “Justify my love for you / ‘cause I know it runs deep through your body too.”

The Scratch Papers, Page 49: “Conventional Contour, Ugly Model”

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Drawn from a 1997 clothing ad. As you may recall, fashion was going through one of its periodic flirtations with ugly models (I think they prefer the word “edgy”). Can you imagine if someone “discovered” you during one of these periods? “Excuse me, have you ever considered modeling?” “What are you trying to say?”

“I Am an Amanuensis” 30, Thomas More

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

“[…T]hose persons who pleasantly and blithely indulge their inclinations seem to be very much better off than those who torment themselves with anxiety in order to publish something that may bring profit or pleasure to others, who nevertheless receive it with disdain or ingratitude.”

Excerpt from Thomas More’sUtopia,” originally published in 1551, republished in The Longman Anthology of British Literature Vol. 1B: The Early Modern Period, edited by David Damrosh, Constance Jordan and Clare Carroll. 2nd ed. New York: Longman, 2003. 688-755. 690. I’m feeling this one today.

Sobriquet,” meaning “a nickname.”

I Am a Quantifier (of Love)

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Referencing my blogg entry yesterday on the word “fuck” as an intensifier rather than an obscenity, my girlfriend Audrey said, “That’s why I love the word ‘hella.’ It’s an intensifier and a quantifier, like, ‘I smoked hella weed.’”

She’s full of wisdom like that. She teaches kindergarten and once said, “It’s nearly impossible to get kids to eat or sleep. But that’s all I want to do.”
