Hodgepodge Smörgåsbord 3: King of the Mice

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I was going to avoid religion this week, but as you can see, I didn’t.  What if next week I promise to complain about work again?

I think this is from 1999 or 2000.

The Scratch Papers, Page 10: Super Jesse Returns

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Behold, my original creation:  Super Jesse.   This is actually one of the oldest drawings I still have, created when I was 11.  The hero Super Jesse was a natural combination of my three biggest childhood interests:  superheroes, fantasy and myself (rampant narcissism and egomania is normal in children, right?).  Only later did I realize how blatantly I had ripped off Super Grover; their helmets are exactly the same!

“79 Percent Of Americans Missing The Point Entirely”

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

From America’s Finest News Source, The Onion. My favorite part:

Offering an example, [Dr. Ronald] Shaw [of Georgetown's Center For American Studies] said that when a group of people who had undergone cosmetic surgery were asked, “Why do some individuals feel the need for cosmetic surgery while others do not?,” 54 percent of them responded that people who opt for such procedures have greater self-worth than those who don’t.

“In other words,” Shaw said, “they believed that people who don’t feel the need to spend thousands of dollars on facelifts and collagen lip injections lack pride in their looks, failing to acknowledge their own wholesale buying into the notion that in our society, a person’s value is determined by his or her appearance.”

Sol Collective Needs Your Help

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Sol Collective may be closing due to lack of funds. This is the gallery that gave me my first non-student show and that will be showing my work in February, which proves their taste, vision and value. If you have $10 to $20 to spare, please donate using the link below. If nothing else, it’s tax deductible.

Here’s the official message from the main man himself, Adam Saake:

Sol Collective needs your help! As many of you may know, the Sol Collective is run by a volunteer staff. We provide arts and cultural programming for the community as well as youth classes and events, both on site and in the community. Those of you who attend our events know, they are usually free or on a donation basis. We do a lot of events, put time and energy into them, while holding down other jobs. Those other jobs have been paying the rent for the space.

Unfortunately we have come to a point where we can no longer do this without community support. We may be closing our doors in a few months if we do not raise funds. Donations are tax deductible. If all of our friends on my space donated $10-20 dollars, it could keep our doors open for over a year! If you support what we do,please donate ,we would like to continue to serve the community..LOve

Please check out our website too! www.solcollective.com

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

The flyer is out for the show “One Off” at Sol Collective on February 9th.  Once again it’s a tee-shirt show with the artists, including Sandoer Berg, Clave, Rusty Jordan, Aaron Winters, myself and many more, contributing one-of a kind designs.  There will also be live music from, among others, The Pets, who will rock your socks off, so don’t forget your earplugs!

Introducing The Scratch Papers

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Welcome to the first installment of my new blog feature, The Scratch Papers, where I’ll be posting excerpts from my journals and sketchbooks. Like Hodgepodge Smörgåsbord, The Scratch Papers will appear on a weekly or semi-weekly basis and cover a variety of styles and subjects: doodles, unfinished concepts, rough drafts, studies, writings and more. I’ve always enjoyed artist’s sketchbooks, and while I didn’t think a sketchbook section would fit the more professional theme and unified front of hardpressedink.com, such material would be perfect for the transitory nature of blogs. Here today, gone tomorrow (unless you check the archives).

Since most people are familiar with my cartoony style, I thought I’d start with something different: sketches of paintings in the Louvre from my trip to Paris in 2004. Viva le Scratch Papers!
