Mark and Nicole Fox, the organizers of A Curious Band of Artists, the Second Saturday show I’m participating in this month, put together a book collecting the work of many of the contributing artists, including myself. The cover of can be seen below; order a copy online here.

The show should be a lot of fun, so I hope to see all of you at The Brickhouse July 12th!

As he describes in his blog, young hardpressed protégé Clave recently drew a portrait of local Punk band The Secretions (see below) and emailed the band a copy. They returned the favor by using it as their default MySpace photo! Congratulations Clave!

It’s always nice to be appreciated, and speaking of …

“[… W]hat may sometimes be a bad habit in daily life and is often, therefore, suppressed or concealed, comes into its own in the realm of art. When it is a matter of matching forms or arranging colours an artist must always be ‘fussy’ or rather fastidious to the extreme. […] He may suffer agonies over this problem. He may ponder about it in sleepless nights; he may stand in front of his picture all day trying to add a touch of colour here or there and rubbing it out again, though you and I might not have noticed the difference either way. But once he has succeeded we all feel that he has achieved something to which nothing could be added, something which is right—an example of perfection in our very imperfect world.”
E. H. Gombrich in The Story of Art. London: Phaidon, 1996. 16 ed. 33.

“‘I’ve always had a soft spot for London, the patched and tattered cloak of its history (some of my best work, obviously; I felt the same about old Byzantium), its dog-earred wisdom and inky humour. You know—you provincial British humans know—what it’s like when you crack under the weight of lost love or ingested desire and Move to London: the city’s ready for you. You take your precious miseries there and unpack them—only to find that the city’s already assimilated them, centuries ago, along with grand Elizabethan passions and mortal Victorian sins. The assimilation’s encoded now—in the chemistry lab colours of the Underground map, in Trafalgar’s punk pigeons, in the thousands of ticking stilettos and caffeine yawns and downed pints and adulterous snogs. You turn up on a rainy Monday afternoon proud of all your woeful particulars—and London humbles you with its wealth of generals. You’ve seen your life. London, it turns out, has seen Life.’”—Lucifer, in an excerpt from Glen Duncan’s novel I, Lucifer, printed on the album art for The (Real) Tuesday Weld’s I, Lucifer, based on Ducan’s novel.

On July 12 at the Brick House Gallery I’ll be participating in another group show for Second Saturday called “A Curious Band of Artists.” Put on by Mark Fox, the show will feature several friends I’ve shown with in the past, such as Aaron Winters and Adam Saake, and friends I haven’t, such as Ashley Harris and Dan Herrera, plus many, many more talented artists I look forward to meeting.
The Brick House is in Oak Park at 2837 Thirty-Sixth Street, Sacramento, 95817. The show also has it’s own myspace page with plenty of photos and links, which can be viewed here. I’ll be showing four recent and new pieces. Hope to see you there!
